The Saskatchewan Forest Centre is mandated to promote the
acquisition, creation and dissemination of knowledge to
support the growth of the Saskatchewan forest sector.
Centred at the Saskatchewan Forest Centre in Prince Albert,
this position will manage the forest science research
program and projects, and will lead the research team. The
Manager will be responsible for focusing applied science on
delivering cost effective forest operations. Activities
would include improved silviculture and forest management,
species and varietal assessment to identify
those best-suited for climate change and harvest/haul efficiencies
for new and merging forest economies. The Manager will oversee
forest planning and harvest operations on the land base that
the SFC currently manages.
The Manager will be part of the Executive Team
responsible for setting long term corporate direction.
Specific duties will be to:
- Build a science based research program that addresses
the needs of industry to be competitive and cost
effective;
- Work closely with the forest industry to understand
needs;
- Network with the forest research community; manage the
SFC forest science research program and projects;
- Coordinate collaborative research projects with other
researchers and;
- Identify appropriate funding sources and develop
research proposals.
Required Qualifications:
- A PhD in forest science or related discipline is
preferred but a combination of experience and education
will be considered. Ideally, candidates will have both
industry and academic background.
- Excellent communication skills that include written
and oral, interpersonal, presentation, diplomacy and
listening. Of particular interest will be the ability to
communicate with industry, researchers and the public on
how research and its application can help address
problems.
- Considerable experience in applying research findings
to practical situations.
- Extensive knowledge and exposure to the forest
industry.
- High degree of computer skills.
The City of Prince Albert, population 35,000, is situated
in the centre of the province in a transition zone between
aspen parkland and boreal forest. It is 140 km to
Saskatoon, population 210,000, and just south of national
and provincial parks that provide a wealth of lakes, forest
and wildlife.
